About Jacob

Jacob was born in 1949, a single son to young parents whom have just arrived from Europe and began settling the new family in a new country. Jacob was not the first artist in the family. Prior to him, his father Moshe made small animal sketches on cigarette box and small pieces of paper which he gave to his son. Those small sketches made a deep impression in Jacob. Later in life Jacob married Broria, daughter of the known artisan Jacob Epstien.

The connection with Epstien had a tremendous impact on Jacobs’s artistic life. During his youth, Jacob wished to purse art. However, after his military service and pressure from his parents he turned his studies toward Chemistry and graduated from the Technion with a Chemical Engineering degree.

Towards the end of the 70’s, Jacob joined the “Institute for Clay Art” in Bat-Yam, and studied there for three years. During his time there he was under the tutelage of artists such as Eliahu Gat, Haiem Kieve, Adler Mashel and others. During those years he created various personal pieces in search of his own artistic expressions.

After many years as a career chemist and researcher, Jacob decides to leave everything and dedicate his entire life towards artistic creation.

On the Technique: “During the creation process I use either individual fingers or the entire palm. As such I make small impressions in the paint almost like handwriting on the canvas.

The layer of color in my paintings does not necessarily cover the entire surface of the canvas and may leave parts of it dry. The colors I use are refined and most are extracted or processed from plants or lavender.

On The Creation: “The concept that best describes my creations is whimsical realism. (not sure what the highlighted word means) My paintings reflect what I observe from the environment closest to me, my studio, family, friends and how this reality is mirrored through my eyes. For the most part I drift between color and form, focusing on one to allow a different perspective for the other. Often I deliberately neglect form in order to obtain what I am looking for in color and lighting. My wish is to boldly reflect the model which guides me in my work.
